The French Shipbuilding Bureau began construction of the first of the six "Scorpio" class diesel-electric submarines ordered by India. The submarine has a displacement of 1,929 tons, a total length of 67 meters and a dive depth of 300 meters. This submarine was designed to undertake coastal defense missions. The officers and men are prepared for 31 people and can snorkel for 45 days. In October last year, India agreed to spend 2.4 billion euros ($3 billion) to order six French and Spanish-designed "Scorpio" class submarines. Although the six submarines will be assembled at the Indian shipyard, the French Shipbuilding Authority will be responsible for providing the key components that the Indian shipyard cannot produce. It is reported that in the next 8 years, about 200 engineers and technicians of the French Shipbuilding Bureau will design and manufacture the parts of the submarine.
