Kekexili fights poaching and sees results Tibetan antelope recovered to more than 70,000 only

In the 1980s, due to poaching, the number of Kekexili antelope fell sharply from the original 200,000 to less than 20,000, becoming an endangered species abroad. In 1998, the Kekexili Natural Reserve was established and the poaching was firmly cracked down. At present, the number of Tibetan antelopes in this area has already returned to more than 70,000.

The reporter learned from the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve Management Bureau that since 2006, Kekexili had not discovered an armed poaching case during the Tibetan antelope conservation. The mysterious and charming Kekexili had not heard the gunfire in six years. At present, the work of the Hoh Xil National Nature Reserve Administration is in the period of transformation and ecological protection.

Located in the hinterland of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Hoh Xil is home to a variety of rare wild animals such as Tibetan antelopes, wild yaks and Tibetan wild asses on the Tibetan Plateau. It is hailed as “a paradise after wild animals”. In the late 20th century, with the popularity of Shatuo cashmere textile products “Shatu” in the West, the shooting of Kekexili continued, and at least 29,000 Tibetan antelopes were hunted each year. The Tibetan antelope was once endangered abroad. After the establishment of the Kekexili Nature Reserve, the number of Tibetan antelopes in this area gradually recovered.

According to Wen Yao, director of the Suonandajie Conservation Station of the Kekexili National Nature Reserve Administration, with the gradual reduction of poaching cases, the work of the Kekexili National Nature Reserve Administration is also undergoing a transitional period, focusing on the original anti-poaching efforts. It has become a change in the protection environment and the observation of the distribution and quantity of animal and plant populations.
